Campaigning to Protect Our Local Football Clubs
Every year, hundreds of our football clubs brace for floods that will cancel matches, destroy facilities, drain precious finances and deprive communities of a place they come together.
These are not one-off events. They are Britain's new winter reality. Every winter brings the same pattern: floods hit, matches are cancelled, volunteers spend months cleaning up, and we fundraise desperately for repairs. By the time we've recovered, it's time to brace for the next flood.
Our clubs are the heartbeat of our communities. They are where our communities gather to celebrate, connect, remember and mourn.
That’s why Clubs Against Floods is bringing together local football clubs across the country and asking people to support them to raise their case for long-term support to deal with flooding. Support Clubs Against Floods by signing their love letter to local clubs. Let’s show our clubs we have their backs and together we can weather the storm.
You go into each season knowing that at some point the weather is going to hit you, and when it does, it hurts. This club has been here for a hundred years. It matters to this community. To lose it because the Premier League couldn’t spare a fraction of what it makes in a single week would be unforgivable.
— Liam Ryder from Whitby Town FC
15 local clubs have joined Clubs Against Floods. A survey of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by the Clubs Against Floods campaign and conducted by Opinium in February 2026 reveals deep concern about whether local clubs can survive in the long term. Those involved in grassroots football in the UK lost an average of 3.5 matches to cancellations or rearrangements this winter due to flooding and extreme weather. Three-quarters of people connected to grassroots football clubs say they are worried about the future of their local club due to flooding and extreme weather. Over two fifths of UK adults believe the government should provide funding to help football clubs adapt their facilities to cope with increased flooding and extreme weather.
